I am an associate professor of Applied Linguistics and Spanish in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of Alberta, and I am also the Spanish Language Program Coordinator. I received my graduate training in Second Language Education from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (MEd) and from the University of New Brunswick (PhD). I teach courses about second language teaching and learning at the undergraduate and graduate level, and Spanish language courses at the undergraduate level. A few years ago, I led the planning and implementation of a TBLT program in the Spanish language classes at the University of Alberta. From a research standpoint, I am interested in the evaluation of implementations of pedagogical innovations, more specifically in teachers’ and learners’ perceptions, and in the impact of teacher education and professional development on the adoption of task-based instruction.

I am an Associate Professor in the Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) program in the department of Educational Psychology at the U of A. I received my graduate training in applied linguistics at Concordia University in Montreal where I was involved in several large-scale research projects dealing with the effect of form-focused instruction. One of these was a pioneering study, co-authored with Roy Lyster, of corrective feedback in French immersion. Some of my other research topics include second language aptitude, fluency, and naturalistic language exposure. I have been an editor of the journal Language Awareness and served on the executive of several associations including the ESL teacher association in Quebec and in Alberta, the Canadian Association of Applied Linguistics, and the international Association for Language Awareness. I have a long-standing interest in teacher education and professional development, with a particular focus on the integration of grammar within task-based language teaching.

I have over 15 years experience in teaching and resource roles, and have worked with students of all ages. My degree in German allowed for opportunities to teach in Hamburg, Germany, as well as at the high school level in Calgary. I have also taught English to adult newcomers using task-based language teaching. I currently support teachers who work with multilingual students.

I have been teaching with Edmonton Catholic Schools since 2014. I am currently the French as a Second Language (4-12) and French Immersion (7-12) consultant for the school division, and I am very excited to be able to support educators in language teaching. I have experience teaching French Immersion, Language Arts, French as a Second Language and Spanish Language and Culture with the school division. I have also taught ESL students and adult newcomers. I believe the more purposeful and authentic language acquisition is, such as through task-based learning, the more engaging and meaningful it will be for all participants.

I began my career with Edmonton Public Schools in 1991. Throughout my years in the classroom, I taught French as a Second Language to elementary students. I have also worked with both adult and school-aged English Language Learners. My teaching philosophy has evolved from teaching students about language to teaching students to use language. I find that providing students with authentic tasks leads to successful language learning.
